How do you know when to stop inhaling on an e-cigarette?

watching an actual cigarette burn down, is a good indicator of when to stop. in fact, it's idiot proof. but with an e-cig, is it not much more difficult to judge? i'm curious about buying one, but i have many questions about its practicality. this is just one.
