If you look like your 18 in CA do they ask to see ID when buying cigarettes?

I have always gotten my friends to buy me cigarettes but the other day i bought an e-cig with my gf who is 18 but doesnt look it at all but they didnt check our id. i was wondering if i go to seven eleven or something will they check if i look like im over 18?
