Is trading within the stock market a lot faster today than it was for example in the 1980s?

Nowadays, stocks can trade at miniseconds. Was stock trading ever that fast for example in the 1980s? I'm assuming with the lack of personal computers and that most trades were phoned into brokers so trading was slower back in those days... as opposed to a click of a mouse button today.
