I believe some of those older lighter sockets do not have enough power for your adapter. One thing you may want to do is run a new socket and mount it in the dash. It would require some extra work and unfortunately some extra cash. It would involve the socket being powered right off of the battery terminal. Therefore you would have an independent power outlet
